I got a text from Inside Lacrosse’s Christian Swezey yesterday afternoon with some possible sad news. As with most things in the lacrosse community, it didn’t take long for the news to spread and to be confirmed.

Former Virginia defensive midfielder Will Barrow died in Charlottesville, according to both Newsday and the Charlottesville Daily Progress. Newsday cited the cause as “an apparent suicide.”

The 22-year-old was a senior on last spring’s final four team, and was also a member of the Cavaliers’ 2006 national championship squad. He played over the summer with the MLL’s Chicago Machine, and the Daily Progress reports he was finishing the final three credits of his coursework at Virginia this semester.

I just left a message for Virginia coach Dom Starsia at his office, and I’ll pass along any word I hear from him. But it’s obviously an incredibly rough time for a program that Barrow was a vital part of for the last four years.
