The CAA did a fine job as always this morning during its media day at the ESPN Zone in D.C.

If there is one tiny quibble (and one the league can’t possibly control), it’s that cell phone reception a story below ground level at the place … well, it’s not very good. It’s not Comcast Center bad —- I just turn my phone off when I know I’ll be in Maryland’s arena for several hours —- but it was not at all conducive for listening to a teleconference.

So that meant foregoing any news (or an opportunity to ask any questions) until later, if at all.

Anyway, this is all a long way of saying that N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien acknowledged linebacker Nate Irving (ankle) will not play against Maryland on Saturday.

“He’s out this week and probably future weeks,” O’Brien said.

Irving is one of the ACC’s best defensive players, and in general the Wolfpack has needed Irving and quarterback Russell Wilson to play well.

Irving’s taken all of 37 snaps in the last four games. It’s an unfortunate turn of events for Irving, but not having to contend with him is one of the biggest breaks Maryland could have received this week.
