Monday is the no-access day at both Maryland and Virginia.

So there aren’t many headlines to be found.

That should change this afternoon, with both Ralph Friedgen and Al Groh handling their weekly press conferences and getting things rolling toward Saturday’s game in Charlottesville.

One guy to keep an eye on (especially after a shaky game on Saturday) is Maryland linebacker Dave Philistin. The quirky senior told me during camp about the altitude machine he sleeps in and, well, if that’s not an offbeat and worthwhile story, I don’t know what is.

I got a look at the machine the morning before Maryland played Eastern Michigan, and it is something else. The photo off that link says quite a bit, but Philistin is very much committed to this form of training.

Funny story from that day: Philistin was ecstatic someone was interested enough in this to have a photographer come over and take pictures for a story. So while TWT photog Joe Silverman was busy setting everything up, I was standing in the doorway. Just then, fullback Haroon Brown walks in, looks at me incredulously and says “You making house visits now?”

Guess so, if that’s what it takes for an amusing story.
