You know who was really valuable for Maryland today?
Eric Hayes.
SEE RELATED:
The senior took a seat with Maryland up 24-8. A little more than a minute later, he was back —- but the Terps had just allowed eight straight points.
The next time he sat down, Maryland was up 55-50. A couple minutes passed before he returned; in that time, Eastern Kentucky closed within 57-55.
So in the first 36 minutes, the Terps held a 73-55 edge when Hayes was in, and trailed 13-2 when he wasn’t.
That certainly isn’t an end-all, be-all. But Hayes was solid, yet again, rolling up 16 points and five assists in another Hayes-like outing.
He doesn’t lead the Terps in season-long plus-minus —- that honor goes to Sean Mosley —- but few players have demonstrated their value so consistently this season than the senior.
