Just got confirmation of something that I’d heard was likely to happen —- former Virginia SID Michael Colley will be awarded the Doyle Smith Award Friday for contributions to the promotion and coverage of lacrosse.
Colley died of an apparent heart attack in July at age 46.

Colley had worked at Virginia for nearly two decades, and he treasured his role as an expert on the game’s history (something Smith, his friend and predecessor as the Cavaliers’ lacrosse SID, also was).
There’s little doubt it’s a well-deserved gesture on the part of the USILA. Just as importantly, Colley would have been honored to receive an award named for Smith.
