One of the more interesting things overheard at yesterday’s media availability (and maybe the most interesting that didn’t have to do was someone’s preparation for a spelling bee) was Dave Neal‘s own reference to Maryland coach Gary Williams’ message the last few days.

Put simply, Maryland is one of the luckiest teams in the country, since the Terps still have a chance to prove their postseason worthiness.

That is the upbeat way of looking at things. North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest all roll into Comcast Center in the next 10 days, and Maryland can greatly aid its cause with a victory in one of those games (along with wins at N.C. State and Virginia). Two notable wins would help even more.

Of course, losing all three games pretty much locks things up in the other direction.

But Williams is right. At least Maryland has a chance to show what it is against some elite teams down the stretch. Not every borderline tournament team is afforded that opportunity.
