The Washington Times - February 7, 2009, 09:05AM’s Seth Hoffman might have had the question of the day once yesterday’s press conference in College Park was over and there were some smaller group interviews.

He asked Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow if there was some sort of hiring rule for a public institution that might have prevented her from making set up a coach-in-waiting scenario, which was really a clever take on the situation.

“There’s a process you can go through on campus to seek a waiver of the usual hiring process for an ethnic minority candidate, and I went through that process and secured university approval,” Yow said.

Which led to this question: Would it have even been possible to set this thing up with a white candidate?

“I would not have gone forward to seek a waiver in the hiring process,” Yow said. “I’m not an HR person, but I don’t think I ever would have thought that would be possible. But it was with James, and I was glad it was.”
