You just knew that at some point, Maryland coach Gary Williams would begin tweaking folks after the Terrapins made the NCAA tournament.
It didn’t happen Sunday, when he defended his program but didn’t seem like he wanted to cross sabres after hearing some good news.
But when a local columnist mentioned that Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes had played significant minutes in the tournament, Williams opted to wryly take a shot.
“Were we in the NCAA tournament two years ago?” Williams asked. “People forgot that for a long time. They must have just remembered that. We played that team Davidson. Pretty good win. Anyway. …”
That won’t be the last such comment, of course, and eventually the talking points Williams will use in connection to this season will become easy to memorize. But for now, it’s sort of fun to sit back and listen to the subtle digs he’ll take —- after all, for now anyway, they’re still new.
