KANSAS CITY, Mo. —- Want to know a way to determine a person of good taste?

Check out what DVD they’re popping into their laptop during a spare moment.

I promise you this —- without knowing anything about California assistant Travis DeCuire before today, I could be certain he’s a fine judge of television sitcoms.

Why? He was leaning back in the Golden Bears’ locker room at the Sprint Center watching the second season of “Sanford and Son.” And because I’m no dummy, I know that is one of the best television shows of all time.

I also didn’t expect to hear that theme song in a locker room full of 18-to-22-year-olds.

(For the record, DeCuire was an assistant at Old Dominion the last five seasons before joining Mike Montgomery‘s first Cal staff).

Anyway, DeCuire said he has every season of the Redd Foxx sitcom in his DVD collection. And that’s more than enough for me to declare him a coach of good taste —- and to admit I might have to make a stop at Best Buy once the basketball season comes to an end.
