Maryland’s men’s basketball program will play in the 2010 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York, coach Gary Williams said.

It’ll be the Terrapins third appearance in the event. They finished third when it was a four-team tournament in 2001, and won in an expanded 16-team bracket in 2006 behind D.J. Strawberry. Next year will be similar to the last trip, with two home dates followed by two games at Madison Square Garden.

It will also be a homecoming for New York native James Padgett and a pseudo-homecoming for Jordan Williams, who grew up in Connecticut.

“That’s a good one, plus you get to go to the Garden, which is always good,” Gary Williams said. “With Jordan and James, you get back there.”

In review, here’s the rundown of Maryland’s preseason tournament appearances excluding the annual BB&T Classic in the last decade:

2000: Maui Invitational (Hawaii)
2001: Coaches vs. Cancer Classic (New York)
2005: Maui Invitational (Hawaii)
2006: Coaches vs. Cancer Classic (New York)
2007: CBE Classic (Kansas City)
2008: Old Spice Classic (Orlando)
2009: Maui Invitational (Hawaii)
2010: Coaches vs. Cancer Classic (New York)
