Andrew Gonnella‘s recovery from a dislocated left knee encountered an early setback Tuesday night.

The Maryland left guard, who was injured in Saturday’s 21-16 loss to Georgia Tech, was admitted to an area hospital after developing a blood clot.

“He’s one of those guys, he was in my office and he’s trying to find a way to somehow get out on the field and play,” coach Randy Edsall said. “I was telling the doctor at 12:30 last night ‘We’ve got to do something to keep him off his feet.’”

Edsall said Gonnella could be hospitalized “a little longer” and said the senior remains in good spirits.

Gonnella returned home from Atlanta on Monday and was upbeat when he met with reporters Tuesday. He had a brace on his left leg and crutches were draped on the chair next to where he was sitting in the team house auditorium.

“He’s still got a tough road ahead of him in terms of surgery and rehab,” Edsall said.
