Maryland announced linebacker Kenny Tate will miss the rest of the season. He will undergo surgery on an undisclosed injury and be out for six-to-nine months.
Tate has not played since an Oct. 1 defeat of Towson. Coach Randy Edsall said Tate will apply for a hardship waiver so he can return next season.

A player is permitted to appear in 30 percent of his team’s games —- all in the first half of the season —- and still be eligible to apply for a hardship waiver. Tate has played in four games (or 33 percent of Maryland’s schedule), but the NCAA manual stipulates a fraction of a game in such computations is rounded up.
Mario Rowson has started the last three games in place of Tate, who was an all-ACC safety in 2010 before being moved to linebacker this season.
