Maryland director of basketball performance Paul Ricci has resigned to take a similar job at Texas Tech.

Ricci, who spent the last three years with the Terrapins, said he was departing in an e-mail to reporters and again during a brief telephone conversation on Tuesday.

Ricci, a former strength coach with the Baltimore Ravens, had an immediate impact on the Terps upon arriving in 2008. In addition to invigorating the basketball program’s strength and conditioning, he also helped raise more than $550,000 in private donations for a basketball-only weight room just off the Comcast Center floor.

Ricci was one of a handful of holdovers from former coach Gary Williams‘ staff under new coach Mark Turgeon. The Terps have two new assistant coaches and also hired a new operations director and a new video coordinator.

Ricci said he would begin at Texas Tech, where he’ll work with basketball coach Billy Gillispie, next week. His last day at Maryland was Monday.
