There’s already one thing George Washington basketball coach Mike Lonergan can count on being less hectic in the years after he settles in at Foggy Bottom: Scheduling.

The Colonials released their schedule Tuesday, the byproduct of some scrambling after Lonergan’s hire in May. Lonergan estimated George Washington added four or five games in the last four months, and also didn’t learn its CBE Classic opponents until late in the process.

“We will have more time” in the future, Lonergan said. “It’s not often in the middle of May you’re still searching for four games. I know we’re working on it already.”

As for this year, there’s a decided road element early on.

The Colonials play six straight away from Smith Center after the Nov. 11 opener against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Previously reported trips to Kansas State and Syracuse are among the highlights.

“It wasn’t exactly what we wanted to do,” Lonergan said. “We inherited a schedule that still needed a lot of games. It’s still tough to get games, never mind home games.”

Still, things even out a bit with four straight home games in late December. Including the BB&T Classic game against Virginia Commonwealth at Verizon Center, the Colonials play half their nonconference games in the District.

The average RPI from a year ago of the 14 nonconference opponents is 134, with only four —- Bradley (233), Bowling Green (245), Delaware State (309) and UMES (323) —- sporting an RPI outside the top 200.

By comparison, the Colonials’ nonconference schedule last year had an average RPI of 186. Half of the 14 opponents on that slate wound up with an RPI above 200.

“I always believe in playing a tough schedule. It’s a great recruiting tool and it’s great for our fans,” Lonergan said before a slight pause. “I might not feel the same way in four years.”
