Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes holds a razor-thin lead over Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, in the state’s 2014 Senate race, according to a new survey conducted by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling.
Ms. Grimes leads Mr. McConnell by 1 point, 45 percent to 44 percent. The poll conducted on behalf of two liberal groups — the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy For America — has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
The telephone survey of 1,210 Kentucky voters found that 40 percent approve of Mr. McConnell’s job performance and 51 percent disapprove, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Mr. McConnell, a top target for Democrats on a 2014 Senate map that mostly favors the GOP, also has a Republican primary challenger in businessman Matt Bevin.
Jesse Benton, Mr. McConnell’s campaign manager, dismissed the numbers.
“George Soros and the Obama allies are up to their same old tricks,” he said. “They have concocted another fictitious poll that has no basis in reality, held it for ten days, and released it at the perfect time in the news cycle to help their upstart liberal candidate. This poll has zero credibility and should be ignored out of hand.”
Another recent poll, from the GOP firm Wenzel Strategies, had Mr. McConnell up by eight points over Ms. Grimes, 48 percent to 40 percent.
