Former basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal called New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie a “great man” in an endorsement ad released Sunday.

“I don’t endorse many politicians, but Chris Christie is different. He’s working with me to bring jobs back to our cities and on a new program to help kids in tough neighborhoods get ahead,” Mr. O’Neal said in the ad. “He’s a good man — excuse me, he’s a great man.”

Mr. O’Neal and the Republican governor have worked together on projects in the past, including an after-school program launched this month that will try to prevent youths from getting involved in crime, drugs or gangs, reported.

Mr. Christie is favored to win a second term against Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono next week.

Mr. O’Neal was born in Newark, N.J. He was the first pick in the 1992 NBA draft and played 19 seasons with six teams, including the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.
