Cornerback Shawn Springs, who reinjured his calf near the end of Thursday’s practice, wasn’t on the field for today’s workout. Defensive end Jason Taylor was out there but without a helmet. Since coach Jim Zorn on Thursday questioned cornerback Fred Smoot’s odds of playing on Sunday, Springs’ absence would make Leigh Torrence a starter for the first time and rookie Justin Tryon the No. 3 corner. That would be really bad news since Cleveland has a potent passing game. The absence of active sacks leader Taylor from the pass rush because of swelling his his surgically repaired calf would compound the problems.
