Defensive end Renaldo Wynn passed his physical and has signed his contract to return to the Redskins for the first time since he was cut at the end of training camp in 2007.

Defensive coordinator Greg Blache now has three starters from the 2004 defense that ranked third in the league: Wynn; cornerback Fred Smoot, who returned in 2007 after a 2-year absence as Wynn is trying to do; and tackle Cornelius Griffin, who has been in Washington all along.

It’s still possible that Blache, then the line coach under Gregg Williams, could wind up with five starters from 2004 since end Phillip Daniels and linebacker Marcus Washington, who were both let go last month in salary cap-induced moves, could still return for the minimum money type of deal that Wynn received.

Of the other six regulars from that defense, linebacker Antonio Pierce is with the Giants, cornerback Shawn Springs is with the Patriots, safety Ryan Clark is with the Steelers, tackle Joe Salave’a and linebacker Lemar Marshall are out of football. And safety Sean Taylor, of course, was killed during the 2007 season.
