SAN ANTONIO — Thirteen days and one unlikely NCAA Tournament run after Selection Sunday, Jamie Skeen remains stung by the criticism.
Mention the ESPN analysts who ripped Virginia Commonwealth University’s inclusion in the tournament and the senior’s voice takes on an edge. It’s personal.
“They said we didn’t belong and we’re in the Elite Eight. What do they have to say now?” Skeen said Saturday. “It was very disrespectful. They went on. They just kept going and kept going. They took turns. They went around the table and everybody said something negative. It hurt your feelings. At the same time, it gives you motivation.”
If Skeen met the ringleaders — ESPN’s Jay Bilas and Dick Vitale — he’d keep his mouth shut. Sort of.
“You know the saying, ‘Respect your elders?’ I was always taught that. I’m not going to say anything mean to them,” Skeen said. “But I probably would say something slick. Really, really slick like, ‘Nice predictions.’”
