This Nov. 7, 2014 photo shows the first Benson Bubbler at the corner of Southwest Fifth and Washington in downtown Portland. Ore. Benson Bubblers are those brass, four-bowled water fountains that you can see scattered through the downtown core. Benson Bubblers go back to 1912, when Simon Benson donated $10,000 to the city (roughly $240,000 in today's money) to purchase and install 20 of the fountains. Engineers with the Water Bureau have struggled for decades with the question of how to balance the city's penchant for conservation with the sheer beauty of the fountains.
