A young black bear hops down from its cage after being released Thursday, June 18, 2020 at Squirrel Meadows, about 25 miles east of Ashton, Idaho, and just south of Yellowstone National Park. The bear had been orphaned last fall as a cub and was near starvation when it was captured in outside a home in Jackson, Wyoming. Normally the Wyoming Department of Fish and Game would euthanize an animal in such poor condition, but the agency decided to send this bruin to Idaho Black Bear Rehabilitation in Boise to see if it could be saved. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
