LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Another county in northern Arkansas has issued a same-sex marriage license in the wake of a judge’s ruling striking down the state’s ban on gay marriage.
Marion County Clerk Dee Carleton said her office had issued one marriage license to a gay couple by late Monday morning. The clerk’s office said two men from Yellville received the license.
Carleton said the county attorney had said they needed to be prepared to issue same-sex marriage licenses following Pulaski County Judge Chris Piazza’s ruling that found the state’s ban unconstitutional. Piazza struck down a 2004 constitutional amendment approved by voters and a similar 1997 state law.
Clerks in Carroll, Pulaski and Washington counties have also granted licenses to same-sex couples since the ban was struck down after courthouses closed last Friday.
