CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Enrollment in Wyoming’s public schools is falling along with the state’s population.

Almost 300 fewer students enrolled in Wyoming schools this year compared to last year, bringing the total below 93,000.

The Northern Wyoming Daily News reports it was the first enrollment drop in at least a decade.

U.S. Census data released Wednesday show Wyoming has lost more than 6,600 residents since a bust in the coal and oil industries began a few years ago.

The vast majority of those residents were lost over the past year and a half.

Wyoming is home to about 585,000 people and is the least populated state in the U.S.
