PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Philadelphia police officer responding to a dog attack was shot in the leg after a bullet from another officer’s gun ricocheted off a home’s wall.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross says the pit bull was attacking an 80-year-old woman Friday afternoon when the officers responded to help.

One officer fired his gun several times inside of the north Philadelphia house and one of the bullets ricocheted, causing a superficial wound to the second officer’s leg.

Ross made the statements outside Temple University Hospital where the officer and woman were taken.

Officer Kevin Fay is in stable condition.

The woman had major injuries to her legs and is in critical condition.

Police say the dog belonged to the woman’s granddaughter, and was killed in the ordeal.
