NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - Thousands of homes and businesses in Nogales were without electricity for about 2 ½ hours after a power surge caused by an apparent arc fire in one of the city’s generators.

Nogales police say the power surge occurred just before noon Wednesday at the Valencia substation of UniSource Energy Services.

An estimated 10,000 UniSource customers were without electricity in Nogales and parts of eastern Santa Cruz County.

UniSource officials say they quickly identified the problem, but estimated power could be out for up to four hours.

The company’s outage map showed all residents had electricity restored as of 2:30 p.m.

Nogales police say foul play isn’t suspected in the power failure.

A spokesman for UniSource says the cause of the outage still is being investigated.
