LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - An 18-year-old who was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a Pennsylvania high school auditorium has been sentenced to house arrest and probation.

Nicholas Carroll pleaded guilty Wednesday to a charge of statutory sexual assault. He was sentenced to one year of house arrest and seven years of probation.

Carroll’s lawyer maintains that the sexual encounter inside Greater Latrobe High School was consensual. Prosecutors disagreed but said they sought a plea deal so the alleged victim would not have to endure a trial.

Prosecutors dropped a charge of terroristic threatening that stemmed from a call Carroll made to a crisis hotline in which they say he threatened to harm himself and others. Carroll will not have to register as a sex offender.
