In China, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. In our fair land, it is the year of The Donald and of turbulence. In the chaotic age of Donald Trump, it is tempting for some and irresistible for others like John Kasich to see the president as a real-life version of “Chance the gardener” (aka Chauncey Gardiner from the 1979 film “Being There”).

While Chance’s simple observations were misinterpreted as profound, The Donald speaks and tweets in simple terms which cannot be wrongly interpreted except by design. And the more he gives free rein to his knee-jerk thoughts, the more unhinged he appears and the more he comes to resemble a spinal animal, one in which higher centers are not knowingly engaged.

The emperor is being revealed by his own tongue as a dangerous fool — but as yet his courtiers and jesters remain complicit. As he himself might say in another context, how sad.
