MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont has been awarded a $1 million dollar grant to create a restorative justice program for the maltreatment of vulnerable adults, official said.

The three-year grant is going to the Adult Protective Services unit of the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living, the department announced Thursday.

The grant from the Administration for Community Living will help to develop a pilot program to serve Chittenden, Franklin and Grand Isle counties, officials said. The hope is to expand it statewide.

An estimated 9.5% of adults 60 and older in the United States experience some form of elder mistreatment each year, according to the department. Elder mistreatment is expected to nearly double over the next 30 years, it said.
