SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Next week’s primary elections in Utah will be slightly different due to legislation passed to accommodate struggles voters may have faced during the coronavirus pandemic.
Mail-in ballots will be allowed to be postmarked on election day under the new rules, and any election results are barred from being released until two hours after the polls close.
The polls may close at 8 p.m. on election night next Tuesday, which means preliminary results will not be released until 10 p.m. at the earliest, KUTV-TV reported.
Mail-in ballots previously had to be postmarked the day before election day to be counted.
The bill was passed by lawmakers in April, and the changes are temporary for this primary election.
Only registered Republicans can vote in their party’s primary. Registered Democratic and unaffiliated voters may vote in the Democratic primary.
