OPINION:
Thank you for Clifford May’s recent op-ed “10 reasons conservatives should not oppose further military aid to Ukraine” (web, Oct. 3). I strongly agree with Mr. May.
Since Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year — done with the intention of rebuilding the empire once ruled by the czars and by Stalin — Russian forces have engaged in almost daily drone and missile attacks on cities.
According to reports, they have destroyed whole cities, such as Mariupol and Bucha, raped and tortured civilians, tortured prisoners of war, and engaged in kidnapping and indoctrination of children.
The job of defending Ukraine belongs to the brave Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers from many countries who have chosen to join them, but they can’t stand alone. We must keep supporting them as winter approaches.
Some say we shouldn’t help other countries when we have so many problems at home. However, abandoning Ukraine could create major
new geopolitical and economic problems for us and the world. It would show that America no longer has the attention span to be an ally
worthy of trust or a rival worthy of fear, and that we mainly care about fighting culture wars among ourselves.
This would be welcome news not only to Putin but to his allies, the leaders of Iran, China and North Korea. It would not bring peace any more than Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement policy did in the 1930s or our abandonment of Afghanistan resulted in peace for those we left there.
