Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the top-grossing film in domestic box office history, collecting $936.8 million at North American theaters since its July 31 premiere.
“Brand New Day” topped 2015’s “Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens,” which drew $936.6 million, to become the No. 1 movie in the domestic market. The Spider-Man film is still in theaters and could become the first to garner $1 billion in North America.
It surpassed 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” to claim the No. 2 spot on the all-time domestic chart on Aug. 25, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Brand New Day” also had the biggest domestic opening weekend ($360 million), posted the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history and became the second-fastest movie, behind “Endgame,” to reach $1 billion at the global box office.
In the global market, the superhero sequel — the fourth film in the franchise starring Tom Holland in the title role — has amassed more than $2.45 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing film behind 2009’s “Avatar” and “Endgame.”
“Brand New Day” contributed to what is now the highest-grossing summer ever at the global box office, with $4.765 billion, topping the previous record set in 2013. Other major contributors to the summer total include Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey,” “Toy Story 5” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and features Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal with a reported $225 million production budget.
