New York Republican Rep. Michael Lawler conceded in his reelection bid on Tuesday.

Mr. Lawler, who has represented his Hudson Valley district north of New York City for two terms, is a moderate within the GOP conference.

One of just two House Republicans seeking reelection in a district that favored Democrat Kamala Harris for president in 2024, he lost his seat to Democrat Cait Conley.

He has often split with House Republican leadership, joining with Democrats in calling for the extension of COVID-era health insurance subsidies.

Mr. Lawler was one of the main players who successfully lobbied for an increase in the cap on state and local tax — or “SALT” — deductions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed in July of 2025.

Throughout the campaign, Mr. Lawler touted his work to boost the tax break, which allows residents of high-tax states to deduct more of their local taxes on their federal tax returns.

However, his record of political moderation and focus on New York issues was not enough to shelter him from the wave that swept the country on Tuesday.
