It comes as no surprise that the education system in our nation’s dysfunctional capital has truancy rates that are beyond belief (“D.C.’s anti-truancy program to cover all schools in Wards 7 and 8 after initial success,” Web, Oct. 20).

Those in charge utter the proverbial boilerplate response of every school day missed being “a day of opportunity lost,” but there is always another program waiting in the wings to remedy the situation. The Department of Health and Human Services will surely serve as an instrument in rectifying the problem, although such an effort has not worked when tried previously.

Government is not the answer because it cannot replace the erosion of the importance of the family. That is no more evident than when the school truancy and crime rate is accompanied by attempted carjackings committed by 15-year-olds.

Unless the primacy of family life is restored, all the governmental programs in the city will not eliminate what is happening. Government cannot replace family. It never has and it never will.
