Strasburg named AFL pitcher of the week

Even though he didn’t appear in Saturday night’s “Rising Stars” all-star game due to a neck strain, Stephen Strasburg still managed to earn an Arizona Fall League individual honor.

The Nationals’ top prospect was named AFL pitcher of the week today, a reward for his strong start last Monday with the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Strasburg allowed one run and four hits while striking out six in a five-inning victory against the Surprise Rafters. That solid showing improved his AFL record to 3-1, putting him in a tie for the league lead in wins.

Strasburg, of course, was supposed to start the Rising Stars game on Saturday but was scratched due to a mild neck strain. There’s been no announcement about the date of his next start, but it’s expected to come this week. The AFL season ends Nov. 21 with the league championship game.

For those who didn’t see the Rising Stars Game on MLB Network, fellow Nats prospect Drew Storen blew the save and took the loss when he allowed a two-run homer to Matt McBride in the bottom of the eighth and his East team leading 7-6. Storen, though, has been otherwise dominant in the AFL, posting an 0.93 ERA in nine relief appearances.
