Finally a Nationals festival

← return to Lovey Land

The Washington Nationals will hold their first FanFest on Jan. 25 at Nationals Park.

It should be an interesting and entertaining affair.

They will surely get their share of love from fans just happy to be at such an event. But management may hear the anger and frustration from fans as well over the product on the field since the Lerners and Stan Kasten took over the franchise midway through the 2006 season, and the perception of indifference to their fan base.

The Nationals could have changed that perception with more efforts like a FanFest to show fans they care, instead of the free-with-a-tank-of-gas winter caravan they ran the past two winters (they will have another winter caravan as well). But management has yet to show the vision to understand the significance of such efforts — how they pay off in ways that don’t immediately show up at the cash register.

Maybe, like their pursuit of Mark Teixeria, the Nationals are finally getting it.

I will be on The Sports Reporters on ESPN 980 AM on Monday. Dec. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m.
