So Jose Guillen is unhappy in Kansas City, according to an ESPN Deportes report. Later Guillen denied he was unhappy. What a shock. There’s a reason this guy is now with his ninth major league team. He is as unstable and unpredictable a player as you would ever come across. Albert Belle was an easier clubhouse problem to manage than Guillen. At least with Belle, there were no surprises. You knew he was angry all the time, and dealt with it accordingly.
Guillen, who played for the Nationals in 2005 and 2006, can be charming one day, frightening the next. What should be frightening for the Royals is that for some bizarre reason, they agreed to pay him $36 million over the next three years. This free agent signing by Dayton Moore is worse than anything Jim Bowden has done here in Washington. I don’t even think Bowden — who once claimed he would let Guillen babysit his kids — would have given Guillen a three-year contract for that kind of money.
Consider this — Moore could have been the GM here in Washington. He was an assistant general manager in Atlanta, and was on the Nationals radar if they were considering a change. By the way, I have a feeling that radar is up and running again.
