Oberto remains Wizards' top target

Summer league has come and gone, and the Wizards remain in the hunt for a backup center that can spell Brendan Haywood and JaVale McGee for five to 10 minutes a game.

Francisco Oberto remains the Wizards’ top target, according to a league source, and the team remains in talks with the 34-year-old Argentinian’s camp, but the waiting game continues. Other players on the Wizards’ list, Chris Wilcox and Jamaal Magloire, no longer are options as Wilcox is now a Detroit Piston, and Magloire reportedly just re-signed with Miami.

Of the summer league prospects, I’m hearing only big men Alade Aminu and Josh Heytvelt have a slim chance of earning another look. Neither was particularly impressive in summer league action. Aminu averaged 3.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in 8.6 minutes a game, and Heytvelt mustered 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 6.6 summer league minutes. But it’s not out of the question that one of the two might receive a training camp invite. The Wizards’ preference, however, remains signing a veteran.
