    It's customary at year's end to share our favorite news items from the year past - from happy moments to outrages. As a professor and historian, I tend to highlight things I fear are lost to American education.     Josef Stalin had nothing to do with the June 6, 1944, Normandy invasion, yet a bust of the Soviet dictator is being given a place at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va. This is an unearned and indecent honor for a man who is remembered as one of history's greatest mass murderers. The memorial to this communist should be removed.

    Robin Reed, slated to become the next president of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation on Monday, is standing by his predecessor's decision to install a bust of dictator Josef Stalin at the memorial in Bedford, Va.

    Opposition grows to Stalin bust at D-Day Memorial

    Opponents of the recently installed bust of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va., are not backing down and have started a worldwide petition.

    The small town of Bedford, Va., is home to 21 men who sacrificed their lives on D-Day, June 6, 1944. It is now also the home of one of the world's few public memorial busts of communist dictator Josef Stalin.
