Even when he got a little wild off the tee late in chilly afternoon of the fourth round, he still made birdies to stretch his lead to six shots when play was suspended by darkness.
The chatter and speculation hasn't stopped since the players arrived at Torrey Pines earlier in the week for the Farmers Insurance Open. The focus of such a busy week is sure to shift to another topic on Thursday.
Dave Kindred, a preeminent American sports writer who has worked his trade for the better part of four decades, was walking down the right side of the first fairway at Kiawah Island with the final group at the PGA Championship when he mentioned he had been teaching a writing class to college students.
"I'm sure he feels terrible about it and I believe 100 percent that he didn't do anything on purpose," he said. "I'm sure he'll not do that again ever."
"I'm glad I didn't have to make the decision," Watney said. "But I guess Tiger's here, so that's good for golf."
