    Arab League wants U.N. peacekeepers in Syria

    The Arab League will call Sunday for the U.N. Security Council to create a joint peacekeeping force for Syria, the latest effort by the regional group to end the 11-month old crisis that has killed more than 5,000 people.

    Chief army defector promises fight to free Syria

    The commander of rebel Syrian soldiers said Sunday there is no choice but to use military force to drive President Bashar Assad's regime from power as fears mounted that government troops will escalate their deadly crackdown on dissent after Russia and China vetoed a U.N. resolution aimed at resolving the crisis.

    Russia, China veto U.N. resolution on Syria; more than 250 killed in Homs

    Russia and China on Saturday vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that sought to stop the Syrian regime's brutal crackdown on an 11-month uprising as activists reported that Syrian security forces had “massacred” more than 250 people using mortar shells, tanks and snipers in the western city of Homs.

    Activists say 23 dead in Syria violence

    Deadly clashes erupted between government troops and rebels in suburbs of the Syrian capital and villages in the country's south Friday, sparking fighting that killed at least 23 people, including nine soldiers, activists said.
