San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom officially launched his campaign to become California’s next governor using Twitter Tuesday, embracing social networking tools in what is likely to be a crowded field in 2010.



“It’s official- running for Gov of CA. Wanted you to be the first to know. Need your help. Check out video: and ReTweet,” the Democrat asked via Twitter.


The tweet linked to a slick Web video and by the end of the day Tuesday the mayor had more than 276,000 Twitter followers and raised more than $15,000 online.


Newsom’s Web site reproduces many of the successful elements from, including organizing and fundraising tools along with social networking such as Twitter and Facebook. The site mentions Newsom’s role in the short legalization of same-sex marriage, and says he will fight for marriage equality if elected.

The first words in Newsom’s 3-minute video announcing his candidacy are in Spanish, perhaps an early push against expected Democratic candidate Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (who has been dodging the will-you-run question).


Newsom also asked for money, tweeting: “Help us raise $20,000 online today. Need your support if we are going to change CA.”


Later, Newsom thanked Twitter star Ashton Kutcher: “@aplusk — thanks for the shout out!”

In other news on the Twitter front, Republican candidate Bob McDonnell and all three of the Democratic candidates for governor in Virginia are on Twitter. McDonnell, Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran mostly use their feeds to promote their campaigns, while Creigh Deeds often is more personal, tweeting several times today, for example, that he was listening to Dave Matthews Band.
