The campaign of former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine announced on Thursday that it raised $1.3 million in the third quarter and finished the quarter with $2.55 million cash on hand. To date, Mr. Kaine’s campaign has raised $3.55 million — ahead of Republican George Allen’s $3.5 million, who had about a two-month head start on the Democrat.

Mr. Kaine and Mr. Allen, the two likely nominees for U.S. Senate next year in Virginia, both reported drops in fundraising numbers as the year progressed, however. Mr. Kaine raised $2.2 million in the second quarter, while Mr. Allen raised $1.5 million, $1.1 million, and $900,000 in the first, second and third quarters, respectively. He finished the third quarter with $1.8 million, after starting it with $1.65 million.

The two campaigns both noted that the candidates spent a significant chunk of their time during the third quarter helping out state and local candidates on the ballot this year. Mr. Kaine’s campaign also noted that the donations came from over 8,500 unique donors.

Final third-quarter reports are due Oct. 15.
