One of the standard questions Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen gets on Thursdays during the season is who the game captains will be.
Interestingly, that question might not pop up this season.
Friedgen is considering instituting permanent captains for the first time in his tenure after his Terrapin Council asked if it was possible to do so.
“I told them I was going to wait until the end of two-a-days to do that and have a team vote,” Friedgen said. “I’ll probably have two on offense and two on defense and then get a special teams captain for every game.”
Traditionally, Friedgen has an offensive, defensive and special teams captain each week. He said he’s instituted permanent captains toward the end of a season a couple times, but never from the beginning of the year.
This time, though, he seems inclined to try something different.
“I have confidence in them that they’ll pick the right guys,” Friedgen said.
