Big surprise here: Florida is the top-ranked team in the AP’s preseason poll.

The highest ranked team out of the ACC? That would be Virginia Tech at No. 7.

California, Maryland’s opening opponent, checks in  at No. 11.

A few other tidbits…

* Georgia Tech (15th), Florida State (18th) and North Carolina (21st) are also ranked.

* No Big East team cracked the top 25.

* In the other receiving votes category were Clemson (34th), Miami (35th), N.C. State (39th) and Boston College (40th).

* Of last year’s 34 bowl winners, only eight did not receive at least one vote. They were Colorado State (New Mexico) Connecticut (International), Florida Atlantic (Motor City), Kentucky (Liberty), Louisiana Tech (Independence), Maryland (Humanitarian), Rice (Texas) and Wake Forest (EagleBank).

* Breaking down the 54 schools receiving votes by conference:

Southeastern: 10
ACC: 8
Big 12: 7
Big Ten: 6
Pac-10: 6
Big East: 5
Conference USA: 4
Mountain West: 3
Western Athletic: 2
