Somewhere, Rick Pitino will be proud of this entry, which is going to discuss politics rather than the sordid affairs of basketball coaches.

Anyway, there’s news out of Florida today that Gov. Charlie Crist has selected who he will appoint to fill out the rest of Sen. Mel Martinez‘s term.

And that appointee was almost Jennifer Carroll, a state representative from the Jacksonville area.

That in turn, is connected to this blog because her son Nolan figures to be a major factor for Maryland’s defense as a starting cornerback.

Nolan Carroll told me last month about how much he’s looking forward to November’s trip to Florida State, in large part because of his mother’s work in Tallahassee.

But imagine if her work would have brought her to D.C. for his final season. Nolan Carroll might have been one of the most well-known college football players on Capitol Hill.

Alas, it didn’t happen. But if his play in camp translates into the season, Carroll might not need much of a boost in becoming a household name among area fans this fall.
