HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. —- Just wrapped up the first quarter at Hofstra, where Syracuse holds a 3-0 lead and look like its way to its 25th final four in 27 years.
Maryland, meanwhile, has lost goalie Brian Phipps to a freaky left knee injury. The junior, who was making his third straight start, landed funny while while coming down from following a high shot. It’s 10 minutes later and he’s still getting worked on at the trainer’s table on the sideline.

Jason Carter, who has saved 49.5 percent of the shots he’s faced, is in and yielded a goal on the first shot he saw.
So far, Kenny Nims looks like the best player on the field for the Cuse. He has a goal and an assist, and has made Maryland’s Max Schmidt look a step slow on a couple occasions.
Meanwhile, Syracuse’s goalie change has worked out fine so far. Al Cavalieri has a few saves and has yet to allow a goal.
