Maryland didn’t turn this into a rout in the first quarter.

But at least it managed to answer when James Madisons scored.

There was definitely some immediacy; Torrey Smith brought back a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown, Maryland’s first kickoff return for a score at Byrd Stadium since Lewis Sanders did so against Western Carolina in 1999.

Now the bad: James Madison managed 113 total yards in the first quarter. There are still some holes in the Terps’ defense, and that prompts some pause. Obviously, there’s more than 40 minutes left, but it has to be something Maryland would like to solve today.

More to come.
