Tried to post this a little earlier, but it would seem it didn’t go through.

No matter.

In any case, Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill was on the Sun Belt teleconference today for a few minutes, and much of what he had to say had to do more with last week’s defeat of Memphis than this week’s game against Maryland.

The nuts and bolts:

* Running back Phillip Tanner will not play.

* Backup quarterback Brent Burnette is out.

* Right guard Alex Stuart‘s status is unknown. “[We’ll] go out there and try to practice today and see how it holds up,” Stockstill said. “He didn’t practice any last week. I won’t know until practice today.”

Burnette has yet to throw a pass in his career. Tanner has 18 carries for 83 yards; he’s the Blue Raiders’ second-leading rusher behind quarterback Dwight Dasher.

If anything, Stuart’s status could have a greater effect Saturday than Tanner, who had 22 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown against Maryland last year in Murfreesboro. Adding a lineman who actually played a bunch against the Terps last year —- 33 snaps, matching his season-high —- clearly would be a bit of a boost.
