Washington Capitals free agent goalie Brent Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. (story here from the Pens’ official site)
Johnson, 32, played 21 games last season for the Capitals before sustaining a season-ending hip injury. A career backup, Johnson arguably was the team’s best net-minder before the injury; he posted a 12-6-2 record with a .908 save percentage and a 2.81 goals-against average. Jose Theodore, the man signed to be the team’s starter, went 32-17 with a 2.87 GAA and a .900 save percentage.

There wasn’t going to be room on next season’s roster; three goalies (postseason star Simeon Varlamov, Theodore and Michal Neuvirth) are expected to compete for two spots. Instead, Johnson will compete in Pittsburgh to be the backup to Marc-Andre Fleury.
