A leader of one of the largest tea party groups in the nation says former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman’s potential presidential bid is creating “zero buzz” within the grassroots movement.
Mark Meckler, the co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, said Huntsman, who plans to enter the Republican nomination contest next week, is “pretty much a non-entity in the tea party movement.”
“Nobody is going to win this primary without tea party support, and I don’t think a guy like Huntsman has a chance of getting tea party support,” he said.
Mr. Meckler said he was not entirely familiar with Huntsman’s fiscal record as governor of Utah, where he signed a statewide flat tax into law, but he shared the opinion of others who think the Republican’s decision to serve as ambassador to China in the Obama administration will hurt his efforts of wooing some GOP voters.
